Module Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how trauma, violence, social determinants of health, and structural inequities can influence health outcomes, health behaviours, and engagement in care.
  • Recognize how trauma and violence may affect a patient’s communication, health care decisions, appointment attendance, and engagement with health services.
  • Apply the four principles of Trauma- and Violence-Informed Care (TVIC) to promote emotional, cultural, and physical safety in clinical interactions.
  • Demonstrate communication strategies that foster trust, choice, collaboration, and patient-centred decision-making.
  • Integrate strengths-based and capacity-building approaches into practice and organization to support patient engagement, autonomy, and equitable access to care.
